Cook a meal from scratch

How we did the maths

Grab some raw ingredients. (Well, we'll allow you a tin of tomatoes or two). And get cooking. Explaining what you're doing to an invisible camera is optional.

I prefer to know whats in my meal

Ever since I went vegan and then just vegetarian, I found it easier to just cook for myself. Simply, because no one else in the household was anywhere near my love for veggies, so I had to do it all myself. Its also much better to know what YOU have put on your own plate, instead of wondering what on earth do those ingeriends and nutrition information mean, at the back of that ready meal...
Now I look out for nutritious products that go well together (5 a day!). I have a couple of cook books (they are a good source of culinary education!) I also look up recipes on the internet, with all these resources there’s no excuse why not to chose a healthy meal which YOU can create, rather than buying god knows what, at MacDonald’s or the Burger King.

    Cooking as my daily task

Is it because I come from a family where cooking has always been important? Where getting fast food was not done? For me cooking is almost like breathing, I can't live without it. I cook every day, even in half an hour it's amazing what you can wrap up. Every Monday I stuff my fridge with fresh vegetables and every day I try to fix something else. With a variety of pasta, rice, bulgur, couscous, potatoes in the house there's always time for new tastes. And ofcourse spices and good olive oil. Cooking relaxes me and my body thanks me for it later on. :-) 17 May 2010, 07:45

    My children are the Cooks

I have just recently started a new project at home: every day one fo my kids (11, 10 & 5) cooks a meal from scratch.
All on their own - except the little one who is just 5, so he can't really do part of it...but I am there to help him.
Since I work full time, this simple action is helping me very much, and I'm more available to give them attention because I'm not stressed that I have to cook dinner...
    Try it!

    Cooking - my therapy!

I feel very lucky that I was shown how to bake by my mum, then went on to do cookery (O-level) at school. Now, I love to cook all sorts of meals, dishes and cakes, and if I'm feeling a bit low, I know cooking will ease my mind and bring calm and clarity into my life again. If you're daunted at the prospect of cooking, start by using a step-by-step children's cook book (one that doesn't just invite you to make sweet sticky things!), and do it with a friend who also wants to learn. Or ask a friend who already cooks to show you / help you. 28 December 2009, 09:53
