How we did the maths

Talk to old people they know cool stuff you don't.

Hanging out with olds doesn't have to mean watching bad TV in an overheated room. It could mean borrowing some of their old records, or getting some tips on how to dress vintage. Grandparents are great for embarassing stories about your parents.

Talk to young people they know cool stuff you don't.

Kids don't have to be scary weirdos, they can be pretty useful too. There's nothing like a 10 year old for giving you a tour round the internet or reminding you why playing outside is a good idea.

    Caring for the Elderly

I am a Care Assistant in a residential home for the elderly. After reading this I made a concious effort to spend more 1:1 time with my residents and let them tell me more about themselves.

I have worked here 3 months and learnt more about my residents today than I have the whole time I've been there!! Thank you for opening my eyes :0)

    i love my grandad :)

well today was another lazy semi-summer day so i decided to spend some time with my grandad! we spent hours talking about how he grew up and what he had seen in his lifetime.. it really inspired me and showed me where i get most of my morals and values from. it was a day i'll never forget :) 03 September 2009, 21:16

    nursing home conversations

Hello. We're four girls in our early twenties who've been visiting a local nursing home to chat to the residents. It's been good fun! Definitely different to hanging out with friends our own age, but more interesting in lots of ways because the old folks have lived such different lives to us. They have great stories! We made a blog to share their stories with our friends (www.afyp.blogspot.com) and we're planning to make a small book about some of our conversations for a uni project. :) 01 October 2008, 08:35

    We've been here since 1963

I've just had a chat with one of my neighbours. Her name is Sheila and she told me that she and her husband moved here in 1963. There is a house in between her house and mine. Marcia lives there now, but up until 1974, it was an orchard.
I hardly ever talk to Sheila. Not for any particular reason, you understand, but we just don't seem to bump into each other.
But this afternoon I was putting out the garden recycling wheelie bin and I had the time for a chat. I didn't have to think about being anywhere else. I could just be. By the time I came back into my house, I felt that I'd enjoyed a little history lesson about my road.
My house was converted into two flats in the seventies (Sheila remembers it well) and I think I'm still using the seventies style bathroom that must have been put in around that time (it's turquoise).
Talking to Sheila made me think that you don't always need to go to a library or get googling when you want to know more about the history of where you live.
You can just have a chat with someone older than you or someone who has lived there longer than you.
    Thank you Sheila!

    Do something less boring instead.

last week instead of watching the tv I visited my godmother, who just happens to be my auntie,in a care home. I had been nervous and worried about it for weeks. It was a wonderful experience if tinged with sadness. My auntie is suffering from dementia and has regressed back in time. To hear her talking so enthusiastically about her life in the army and wearing her welly's on the farm was a much better way to spend my time than goggling at the tv. Turn off that tv occasionally and do something worthwhile instead.

Spending time with people from different generatio

I lost my Grandparents when I was still a child and wanted to do something to get to know people from that generation, so I now volunteer to take two local elderly people, Pat and Bob, to a Sunday tea party every month.

It's good fun and once you hear some of their jokes, you soon lose your assumptions about old people being quiet and innocent!

    Different generations ...

My oma (gran in Dutch) is getting very very old ... so we thought about what would make her happy this xmas. We are gathering stories, photos, memories from all her relatives and friends to put into a scrap book and give to her at xmas, when we all get together. My page for it is the action 'spend time with someone from a different generation' translated in Dutch and then lots of photos of us together throughout the years with little stories about times that we have spent together and things that we have learned from each other.
