Action #082

'Aspire not to have more, but to be more.'

This action has been done 4,880 times which means 4,880 people are having less and being more.

This one's a quote by Archbishop Oscar Romero. A human rights activist in El Savador. Big of a big statement, what does it mean? Well break it down to little everyday things: Aspire not to have more stuff: Maybe that translates as taking a binbag of your goodies to the charity shop, rethinking what you want for a birthday present or deciding you don't actually need a second car.

    JVC

Did a Jesuit Volunteer year and tried to live it out with a community of lovely people in Manchester 2007/2008. I've been trying to do it ever since, though. 28 June 2010, 09:22

    Leave stuff behind...

At the moment I am an exchaneg student in th USA. I lived with one hostfamily for the first eigth months, but I moved to a different one. When I moved I didn't take all the little gifts I got for Christmas and Easter, I didn't used or looked at them anyways.. 03 May 2010, 18:19

A good way to a better life...

Tring hard to be a minimalist, I gave more than 75% of my stuff away to the ones in need. This helped me use the rest of my stuff more effectively and effectively. 01 May 2010, 10:26

    Background reading

If you want some (admittedly, pretty academic) background reading on having and being, try Erich Fromm's 'To Have or To Be' (dating from the 1970's). 02 November 2008, 17:54

    out there

I have been out today helping to clear a path, pick up litter and remove invasive plants. I am a member of Greengrid Taskforce volunteers in Essex and we have great fun improving the environment. It is a great way to work off calories, get a sun tan and meet new people, whilst doing something worthwhile. After 16 years in an office, and some time off work for depression it has really helped me to focus on what is important in my life.

When will people think they have enough?

I am greatly concerned that people are loosing their sense of responsibility, graciousness, concern for others and the appreciation of all things being connected.
